News & ArticlesMarch/1/2013 HON. ANTHONY V. CARDONA AWARD TO BE PRESENTED AT APRIL 23RD ALBANY CHILDREN’S CENTER RECEPTIONHON. ANTHONY V. CARDONA AWARD TO BE PRESENTED AT APRIL 23RD ALBANY CHILDREN’S CENTER RECEPTION Judge Anthony Cardona played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Children's Center at Albany County Family Court. Having previously sat in Family Court, Judge Cardona was acutely aware of the many challenges facing families who turn to the court for help. In June of 1995, the Albany Children’s Center opened its doors, becoming one of the first of five Centers to operate in the NYS Unified Court System. The Center serves over a thousand children each year, providing a safe haven and nurturing environment for children while their caregivers take care of court business. The Center’s service provider, Albany Community Action Partnership (ACAP), is dedicated to ensuring that children are cared for by professional staff who are specifically trained to handle difficult issues that can arise during court proceedings, such as a change of custody, and to serve as a resource to help families in crisis. The Friends of the Albany Children's Center, Inc. was created to raise funds for the Center's operations. In 2012, the Friends established the first annual Hon. Anthony V. Cardona Award in recognition of the work individuals and organizations do on behalf of children and families in need. This year's Hon. Anthony V. Cardona Award recipients are Margaret Diggs, Albany County Youth Bureau Director and President of the ACAP Board of Directors, and WMHT for its Ready to Learn early literacy skills program and its support of the Center’s programming. On April 23rd, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., please join the Friends as we celebrate the legacy of Judge Cardona's good works on behalf of children and families. This event will be held at the New York State Bar Center on One Elk Street in Albany. Your support is needed to continue the valuable services of the Center and to further the Center's mission. For additional information, please call Margaret Vella at 439-6001. Thank you. Through the leadership of then Chief Judge Judith Kaye, State grants were made available to operate Centers in New York State courts. The Albany County Family Court Center was one of the first of five Centers to operate in the NYS Unified Court System. In 1994, an Advisory Committee was created to support and monitor the Albany Center's operations. As State monies fund only 60 percent of the budgets of Children’s Centers, the Center’s Advisory Committee held a fund raiser in March 1995 to raise the additional monies needed to operate the Center. The Albany Center opened its doors in June of 1995. The Center serves over a thousand children each year, providing a safe haven and nurturing environment for children while their caregivers take care of court business. Albany Community Action Partnership is the Center’s service provider. The children at the Center are cared for by professional staff who are specifically trained in issues that can arise during court proceedings, such as a change of custody as well as other issues very often involving families in crisis. The Friends of the Albany Children's Center, Inc. was created to raise funds for the Center's operations. In 2012, the Friends established the first annual Hon. Anthony V. Cardona Award in recognition of the work individuals and organizations do on behalf of children and families in need. At the Friends annual fund raiser last year, former Albany County Executive Michael Breslin received the Judge Cardona award for the services Albany County provided in support of the Center and the families it serves. Due to a significant reduction in the Center's State funding effective April 1, 2012, the Center, which had been operating Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 5 PM, decreased its hours to Monday through Thursday from 9 AM to 1 PM. Funds the Friends raised last year were utilized to expand the hours of the Center's operations. Please join us at the Friends annual fund raiser to be held on April 23, 2013 from 5:30 to 7:30 PM, at the New York State Bar Center, One Elk Street in Albany. Your support is needed to maintain the expanded hours of the Center and will further the Center's valuable mission as we celebrate the legacy of Judge Cardona's good works on behalf of children and families. This year's Hon. Anthony V. Cardona Award recipients are Margaret Diggs, Albany County Youth Bureau Director, and WMHT for its Ready to Learn early literacy skills program. |
