New Rule: Forfeiture Rule: Failure to notify the
county coordinator of the inability to arrive at a scheduled trial, at the
earliest possible time and no later than 2 hours before the posted start
time of the trial, without good cause, will result in a forfeit by the
offending team. If the forfeit occurs in any round of the tournament where
points are important, the winning team will receive a score equal to the
score of the average of all winning teams in that round.
"Good cause" shall be determined in the sole discretion of the local
coordinators following an investigation into the surrounding circumstances.
Requests made to reschedule trial dates will be accommodated if possible.
The earlier the notification, the more likely the ability to reschedule the
trial.
NEW YORK STATE/ALBANY COUNTY
BAR ASSOCIATIONS
HIGH SCHOOL MOCK TRIAL TOURNAMENT
RULES FOR SCORING AND TOURNAMENT SEEDINGS
All schools will participate in two trials. Two preliminary rounds will be held on the dates outlined.
During the preliminary rounds, the judges will award points in accordance with the standard rules as outlined in the statewide mock trial tournament materials. The ranking of schools after the preliminary rounds will be determined first based upon win-loss records, then by total points. Ties will be decided by a coin toss (or odd lot if there is a three or four way tie). The Preliminary rounds will be held on February 28 and March 6, 2008. The BYE Round will be held on March 13, 2008. For the preliminary rounds, the match-ups are as outlined on the annexed schedule of trials, with the side each school will represent designated as set forth on the schedule.
The top eight (8) teams will advance to the quarter final round on April 2, 2008. As stated, the seeding of teams will be based first upon wins and then upon points as awarded during the preliminary rounds. In the quarter final round, the teams will compete against each other as per the attached schedule. The 1st through 4th place teams will choose which side they want to represent in the quarter final round.
The four schools which win their quarter final trials will proceed to the semi-finals on April 9, 2008. The right to select which side a school will represent will be determined first based upon win-loss records and next by total points. If necessary, ties will be decided by a coin toss.
For the final round on April 23, 2008, the team with the most wins will pick
which side it will represent. If both teams have the same number of wins, the
team with the most points will have the right to select the side it will
represent. If necessary, the right to choose its side will be determined by a
coin toss.
